Can I Keep My WhatsApp Number When Using an eSIM?

Yes, you can keep your WhatsApp number when using an eSIM, including a Flash eSIM. If WhatsApp is already set up on your phone, switching mobile data to Flash does not change your registered WhatsApp number. Your existing account can use your travel data connection.

You do not need to tell everyone a new number before your trip. The key is to change your phone’s mobile-data settings while keeping your existing number in WhatsApp.

Why your WhatsApp number stays the same

Your WhatsApp account is linked to the number you registered. Its internet connection can come from a different SIM, an eSIM or Wi-Fi.

• Your WhatsApp number: how people find and contact your account.
• Your Flash eSIM: the mobile internet connection your phone uses while travelling.

For example, if your WhatsApp account uses a Singapore number and you travel to Japan, it keeps its +65 country code. Choosing a travel data plan does not turn it into a +81 WhatsApp number.

WhatsApp explains that switching or removing a SIM does not automatically log you out.

Does WhatsApp work with a data-only Flash eSIM?

Yes. A data-only eSIM can provide internet access for an existing WhatsApp account. You do not need a new phone number or a plan with call minutes for WhatsApp messaging and internet calls.

Our Flash Help Center confirms that using Flash for mobile data does not normally change your WhatsApp number. A data-only plan does not provide a number for registering a new account or receiving SMS verification codes.

How to use WhatsApp with Flash eSIM

1. Check WhatsApp before travelling. Open your existing account and send a message.
2. Install Flash eSIM using your order instructions. Check the plan’s activation timing before installation.
3. Select Flash for mobile data at your destination. Enable the Flash line and its Data Roaming setting as instructed for your plan.
4. Check your home line separately. Turn off its data roaming and automatic data switching if you want to keep travel data on Flash.
5. Send a WhatsApp test message. Leave your registered number unchanged. Do not use Change Number just because you installed an eSIM.

Where to choose your mobile-data line

On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → Cellular Data and select Flash. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching to keep data on that line. Menu labels vary by region and iOS version. See Apple’s Dual SIM guide.

On Android, look in SIM or mobile-network settings for the preferred mobile-data SIM and choose Flash. Menu names vary by manufacturer; follow the device instructions supplied with your eSIM.

Can I turn off my home SIM?

Yes, an already registered WhatsApp account can keep working over Flash data or Wi-Fi with your home SIM switched off. Switching off a line is different from cancelling the number.

Will my chats, groups and contacts stay?

Changing the data connection on the same phone does not erase WhatsApp chats or remove you from groups. People can continue messaging your existing account.

Moving to a new phone, however, is a separate task.

Can I make WhatsApp calls without international call charges?

WhatsApp voice and video calls use the internet. WhatsApp does not charge international calling rates, although mobile-data charges apply. Calls made over Flash eSIM mobile data consume your Flash allowance; calls over Wi-Fi use that Wi-Fi connection. 

Use the call button inside a WhatsApp conversation to call through WhatsApp. Dialling in your phone’s regular Phone app is a carrier call and follows the selected line’s calling charges.

Service availability can depend on local restrictions and the plan’s network access. If WhatsApp calls are essential, check the specific destination product with Flash before buying.

What if WhatsApp is not working after switching to Flash?

First, separate an internet issue from an account issue:

• No apps or websites load: check your selected data line, destination coverage, Data Roaming and the APN settings in your eSIM instructions.
• Other apps work: check whether WhatsApp is allowed to use mobile data in your phone settings. Try Wi-Fi to help narrow down the issue.
• Messages work but calls struggle: try a stronger connection and check whether calling is restricted on the network.
• WhatsApp requests verification: follow the verification process for your existing number. Changing the mobile-data line cannot complete account verification.

Do I need to change my WhatsApp country code abroad?

No. Travelling does not require you to change your registered number’s country code.

Will my number change when the travel eSIM expires?

Will ordinary SMS arrive through Flash?
